You can play these external zones with or without the Xk-1c voice sounding."įor horns, strings, and the occasional "semi-passable" solo orchestral instrument, look at some of the sound modules like the Roland XV series units or the older Yamaha Motif Rack units. "Up to three external MIDI zones may be controlled by the Xk-1c, with all settings saved as a preset.

You can typically download the pdf manuals and read all about it before plunging into a purchase on ebay - whether the seller even has the paper manual is often a question to ask.Īs noted previously, you're already 90% there. A little daunting the first time, but once you get the hang of it, makes perfect sense.

The owner's manuals go into a deep dive about how to accomplish this. You can change voices on the fly, but the specific MIDI setup messages you'll need to send to pre-select certain combinations of module voices will depend on the sound module. The external sound modules would then serve as that "thing" your XK1c actually controls. The beauty is, with your Hammond XK1c, you HAVE a synth-like keyboard with solid MIDI control features. Just the music creation guts from inside in a smaller (often rack-mountable) knob-controlled unit. In fact, most of the sound modules produced by Yamaha and Roland are basically the "brains" of their flagship keyboards sold WITHOUT the actual keyboard. Most sound modules have a range of special effects, mixing choices, multiple voices that can be played simultaneously.

but without the computer and related operating system and software DAW, etc. Yes, an external sound module basically is a functional VST of sorts. With your Hammond XK1c you can use it as a MIDI controller directly sending sound bank selection setups (presets you'll design to meet your needs) that will directly select various combination of sound module voices from your XK1c. Thanks so much for the advice so far!!Īh, welcome to the world of MIDI control. Would an external sound module have Vst's built in? I can see how I do this via a DAW - selecting different banks of sounds but how would that work with an ESM? I've looked at a few on ebay and they are certainly affordable, I'd just like a little guidance on which one would suit my needs the best. I use Kontact Horns loaded into MuLab as I mentioned. The band need me to play horns, strings and the occasional flute or synth sound in addition to quite a lot of organ - which I love, hence the Hammond. I had no idea such a thing existed and I'd really like to pursue that (I'm fairly new to all this electronic gear having played simple acoustic piano for what seems like an age). OneWatt - your advice regarding the external sound module sounds fantastic. I'm going to invest in a good quality cable. and with an external sound module you can ditch the whole world of USBMIDI DIN connection cables from the outset. You're about 90% there already with your current gear. You'll avoid all that fussy DAW/MUlabs/laptop configuration stuff - which strike me as a series of links in your sound chain just waiting to produce an ill-timed "choke" during your live performance. Since you're gigging, you might wish to explore an external sound module (lots of great used Roland or Yamaha stand-alone sound modules on ebay) so you can just flip a switch and connect. But first, allow me to digress.įWIW, I also connect a Hammond digital keyboard (XK3c) to external sound sources to add non-organ voices. If you've got an annoying click sound with your no-name USBMIDI DIN adapter that's bugging you, I'd suggest ditching it and spending a (very few) bucks on a slightly better one. I only paid a few dollars for the cable so if buying a better quality one would help I'll gladly do that. It's not very loud but I'd like to get rid of it if possible. One slight issue now is that whilst the PROZOR cable is in there's a constant 'tick' sound which is synchronized with the green light. Thank you very much for both your replies. (I know, I should have read the manual more thoroughly, and yes, I do feel a little stupid). No, I DIDN'T know the IN had to be in the OUT socket. However clothearednincompo has solved the problem. The only issue I had was with the PROZOR MIDI IN/OUT to USB cable which I use with the Hammond. There's a USB out on the on the Yamaha, so I haven't been using the same cable for both - just a straight forward USB to USB for the Yamaha to DAW.
